Vakantietip: bezoek deze zomer het paleis en de tuinen van Versailles, daar exposeert Olafur Eliasson bijzondere installaties. Zes werken in het paleis en drie in de tuin.
Olafur Eliasson (IS/DK, 1967) onderzoekt perceptie, beweging, lichamelijke ervaring en bewustzijn. Hij is vooral bekend om opvallende installaties zoals de The Weather Project (2003) in de Turbine Hall van het Tate Modern, Londen, The New York City Waterfalls (2008), en vier kunstmatige watervallen op de stranden van Manhattan en Brooklyn.
Samen met de architect Sebastian Behmann, heeft Eliasson in 2014 Studio Other Spaces opgericht, een Internationaal Bureau voor Kunst en Architectuur. Studio Other Spaces richt zich op interdisciplinaire en experimentele bouwprojecten en werkt in de openbare ruimte.
Over de tentoonstelling in Versailles zegt Olafur Elasson: “For my exhibition this summer, I am doing a series of subtle spatial interventions inside the palace deploying mirrors and light, and in the gardens, I use fog and water to amplify the feelings of impermanence and transformation. The artworks liquefy the formal design of the gardens while reviving one of landscape architect André Le Nôtre’s original, unrealised visions: the placement of a waterfall along the axis of the Grand Canal. This waterfall reinvigorates the engineering ingenuity of the past. It is as constructed as the court was, and I’ve left the construction open for all to see – a seemingly foreign element that expands the scope of human imagination.”
